Group Statement:

925 presents the work of nine graduating visual artists on the 125th anniversary of North Metropolitan TAFE. The works invite us to pause, reflect and engage with the personal and cultural relates of contemporary life.

The collection translates the group’s lived experiences into visual narratives that explore diverse themes such as place, memory, emotion, shared humanity and environmental concern. The works also explore cross cultural perspectives, optical phenomena, contemplation and trauma.

The selection of material and mediums is integral to each artist’s personal journey and concerns, and the wider stories yet to come. The viewer is invited to celebrate our artists, explore thought provoking artworks and connect with the stories told.

Artist Statement:

Driven by an interest in everyday settings, I investigate how these scenes can be transformed through colour and perspective. My subject matter favours Australian urban landscapes, with my current focus being my home suburb of Falcon, Western Australia. I strive to find compositions that show the unexpected and bring pleasure to the viewer. By capturing a setting in a new way, the viewer gets to reflect on how charm is in places you’d never expect. I want the viewer to be intrigued by a simple setting displayed in a way that’s new to them.

I work in photography, printmaking and drawing. Photography allows me to depict my surroundings how I choose. I enjoy the slowness of analogue photography and choosing my shots with intention. I love the surprise of a new film stock. A shot I barely considered might become my favourite on the roll. Working in this way allows me to embrace the unexpected and come up with new ideas for my practice.
